Where it goes wrong

1901 cartoon: a bull in a checked suit blows soap bubbles labelled ‘inflated values’ while a crowd of investors reaches for them.

Most traders don’t fail for lack of ideas. They fail in three predictable places.

Too many rules, tuned settings, costs left out. It looks perfect on paper and falls apart in the first months live.

“Wall Street bubbles, always the same.” Udo Keppler, Puck, 1901.

Every system has long, painful stretches. Without other systems to offset it, each drawdown feels like proof it’s broken.

Edison’s Universal stock ticker, 1870s. Smithsonian.

The override after a bad week, the system dropped at the bottom of its drawdown. The system was fine; the decision wasn’t.

You build. I challenge.

You work on your own platform with your own data, so you understand and own every rule. My job is to question the logic, and the assumptions you didn’t know you were making.

Specify

Turn the idea into exact rules, and decide what success looks like before you test anything. The first question for any system: when should it make money, and when should it lose?

Example

Market
US equities, liquid names only
Entry
Close above the 100-day high
Exit
Trailing stop, 3 × average range
Makes money
Long, persistent trends
Loses money
Choppy, sideways markets

Test

Review your backtest, then stress it across periods, settings and costs. If the edge only lives at one lucky value, it isn’t an edge.

Example: does it survive when every setting moves?

Combine

Systems that work together, not just side by side. Trend following, mean reversion and hedges each have their season; a portfolio lets one carry the others through theirs.

My own portfolio today

47

live systems: trend following on US equities as the engine, mean reversion and hedges around it.

Size

Position sizing and risk rules for your account and the drawdown you can actually sit through. You choose your risks, not your returns.

Example

Account€100.000
Risk per trade0.5%
At risk if stopped€500
Stop distance€4,20
Position119 shares

Go live

Clear criteria for going live, for stepping in, and for leaving it alone. Then the hardest part: staying with it long enough for it to work.

Most traders switch the system off somewhere in here. The rules didn’t change. Drawdowns are part of the design, not a reason to redesign.

One emotional decision that costs 2% of this account is €5.000: five months of Partner. That is what Partner is for.

Starter

One idea, taken from concept to a tested, tradeable system.

Three weekly sessions: specify, test, size and decide. You leave with one backtested and stress-tested system, sizing and risk rules for your account, clear criteria for going live and for stopping, and a process you can repeat.

Core

A small portfolio of systems that work together, ready to trade live.

Six weekly sessions, starting from a short questionnaire on your goals, capital, horizon and the drawdown you can live with. You leave with complementary systems, sizing and allocation that fit your account, and a plan for taking them live on your own platform. Early-adopter price for the first five clients.

A weekly 60-minute session on your systems and the decisions in front of you, and email support in between with a reply within two working days. Best suited to portfolios from around €150.000. Three-month minimum, then month to month.

Every mistake in the book

I’m Koen van Goch. My first trades, in 2022, had no strategy, no stops and no plan. The Turtle Traders taught me to follow rules instead of predictions. Today I run 47 systematic strategies live on US equities.

Honest, critical, in your interest

Before you book

Do you give signals or manage money?

No. You place your own trades on your own account. I never tell you what to buy, sell or hold, or when. Every decision stays yours.

Will you write or fix my code?

No. You build on your own platform with your own data, so you understand and own every rule. If you can’t code yet, you need to be willing to learn.

How do the sessions work?

One-on-one on Zoom, in English or Dutch, one session a week so you have time to do the work in between. Each session starts by reviewing what you built.

Why show the bad months?

Because I’d rather you see an ugly drawdown before you meet one with real money. The figures come straight from Interactive Brokers, time-weighted and net of fees.

Can I add sessions later?

Yes. Extra sessions are €247 per hour, during or after a programme.

Who is Partner for?

Traders who finished Core and trade their systems live, ideally with a portfolio from around €150.000, who want their decisions challenged rather than approved.

Is this investment advice?

No. Consiquant provides education and system-building support. Trading involves risk, and past results are no guarantee of future results.
